“Please help. My client has purchased Facebook likes, and I am not sure what to do. The likes were bought before I took over the accounts.”
This is a question that gets asked on a regular basis from social media managers. So what is the right thing to do?
Do you close the account and start a new account, or do you keep the account as is?
In the past, having a lot likes gave the impression that you or the company was an expert in the field. Nowadays, it is more important for a page to have great engagement through likes, comments and shares.
These are the three things that happen on your page when you have fake followers.
If you have some fake followers, they will not be engaging and interacting with you on your page, meaning that according to the metrics and Facebook algorithm, the people that are are organic followers will not be seeing as many of your posts as they would have if you did not have the fake likes.
Insights on your page are your analytics. Facebook insights are very important for you to understand who is engaging with your page, where are they from, which posts are performing best, best times for posting, etc. Bought followers distorts these insights completely.
Depending on how much money you put into boosting a post and the amount of people you have that are fake followers, chances are your boost is going to go to a number of the fake accounts. If you have 1000 likes, of which 500 are fake, a boosted post for $5.00 will have Facebook state that you will reach ~400 people. If it is a 50/50 ratio of likes to fake likes, 400 won’t be a true representation. Instead of reaching 400, like Facebook states, you will only have reached ~200.
Something else to be aware of is that Facebook intermittently does a bulk ‘sweep’ and these Facebook accounts, which will disappear from your account. You may be saying “bring it on” but it is not a good look for a brand when it drops likes in one hit from 10,000 to 5,000.

Being noted for fake likes, by Facebook, will also affect your account in the future. It seems that Facebook has an algorithm to know when an account is performing well or not. It seems when you are losing likes, it starts showing posts less to your people.
Our advice would be to start a new account and build it with campaigns and advertising. Promote your page wherever you can.
Keep the other account and let people know you are moving to a new page. In the meantime, you could slowly start deleting the fake followers.
Once they are gone, you can try merging pages.
Focus on building your new page and do some focused, targeted advertising.
